Honoring a soldier and a father

Video

Body

On Memorial Day, national cemeteries throughout the country decorate the grounds with flags of all sizes. Saturday, Anna Allegretto had the chance to honor Clyde Rose, a fallen soldier very close to her heart.

“My father was an Electricians Mate, 1st Class in the United States Navy; passed away in 1976 with 19-and-a-half years of service,” Anna said in reflection.

Anna always knew she wanted to follow her father’s example, and as soon as she was old enough she began her service to the country.

“I turned 18, and that’s just what I felt my calling was,” Anna said.

NHC Veterans Council member Frank Roberts said of Anna, “She lost her father 32 years ago, when she was 12 years old. She followed his footsteps, joined the Navy herself and she just retired a month ago.”

When the New Hanover County Veterans Council said they needed flags for the Memorial Day service, Anna considered buying a new one, but instead she donated the flag given to her family after her father died in combat.

“It was just more sentimental, more emotional and more duty bound to donate my fathers flag,” Anna said.

As members of the military prepared to raise the flag for the first time, Anna stood by at attention, saluting the flag, our country, and her father.
