Southport Police arrest murder suspect

Body

Police have arrested a man in Friday’s murder of a 62-year-old Southport woman, the first murder in Southport in eight years.

Police said a large number of missing coins from the home of Gladys Myrie led to the arrest of her alleged attacker.

Monday night, police arrested 18-year-old Lee Roy Jolly, Jr. of Southport. He is charged with the murder of Gladys Myrie, with other charges pending.

“I am sure that they probably knew each other. Everyone in that community is kind of close together,” said Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove.

Police said the suspect tried to sell a collection of coins stolen from the victim’s home. The stolen property led to an interview with Jolly where they found additional evidence.

Police said they have a murder weapon used in the attack, but would not go into further detail.

Jolly’s father was at a police press conference Tuesday. He said his son was on probation for arson, but there is no way Jolly, Jr acted alone in the robbery and murder of Gladys Myrie. “I’m not going to say he didn’t have any knowledge of what happened because it’s obvious with some of the evidence they said they had found, but I do know that he was not by himself,” said the Lee Jolly, Sr., the suspect’s father.

Police say they’ll keep the investigation open and will continue to investigate any leads.

Lee, Sr. is standing behind his son. “We love him and we’re here to support him and I’m not going to let him take this fall by himself.”

Meanwhile, friends and family gathered at the home of Myrie’s mother, but declined to speak on camera. Neighbors say Myrie was a friendly woman who volunteered at Dosher Memorial Hospital.

“She was a nice lady, she didn’t bother anyone. She minded her own business, she’d get out there and water flowers and everything,” said John Williams.

Chief Dove credited help from the Brunswick County Sheriff’s Department and the SBI in the quick arrest. If you have any additional information, call Southport Police at 910-457-7913.
