Whiteville Country Club plays host to Wolfpack Club meeting
Whiteville is the home of the Wolfpack, the Whiteville High School Wolfpack. Tuesday night, the Whiteville Country Club played host to another Wolfpack, the NC State variety. Football coach Tom O’Brien and women’s basketball coach Kellie Harper were the guest of honors.
Kay Yow was respected for her coaching ability at NC State, but there was more respect for being the person she was. Yow lost her public battle with breast cancer earlier this year.
Kellie Harper is the new women’s basketball coach at NC State. She worked the crowd at Tuesday’s Wolfpack Club meeting in Whiteville. For Harper, it is going to be a challenge replacing such a coaching legend. “You know, I just have to come in and be me. I can’t try to be her. That just wouldn’t work. We’re trying to build on her legacy and trying to use that to push us forward,” she said.
Wolfpack football coach Tom O’Brien is entering his third season as the leader of the pack. His goal is for NC State to be a champion in the classroom, in the community and on the field. In fact, State may be the early favorite to win the Atlantic Division of the ACC. O’Brien said, “I have to deal with reality, and I don’t know if we’re as good as some people are picking us to be right now. But as I told the team today, it doesn’t mean we can’t be.”
