Gregory Elementary to hold public meeting over H1N1 cases

Concerned New Hanover County parents will get their questions answered Monday night, after four students tested positive last week for the H1N1 virus.

Three Gregory Elementary students and one student from Snipes Academy have been required to stay home for a minimum of seven days. The schools have disinfected classrooms and buses.

Many parents decided to pull their children out of school Friday. More than 200 students were absent from Snipes and Gregory. The health department said there is no need to close the schools right now, unless more cases are discovered.

“I can understand why they would want to keep it open. There is only one kid at this school and three at the other, as long as things don’t get out of hand you can’t panic about situations like this,” said Snipes Academy parent Marie Waters.

Administrators are still working to determine who else might have been exposed to H1N1. Monday night’s parent informational session will include senior administrators from the school system, as well as health department representatives.

The meeting is at Gregory Elementary School in the media center. It begins at 6:00 p.m. It is open to the public, and concerned citizens are welcome to attend.
