Beach is a great spot for surfing, swimming, sunning and… wrestling
Beachgoers are confronted with a lot of options. An obvious choice is surfing. Of course there’s always the possibility of playing in the sand or working on the perfect summer tan. And don’t forget, there’s wrestling too. Yes, wrestling on the beach.
Saturday marked the debut of beach wresting in Carolina Beach. “This is our first state championship ever, and it’s the first sanctioned beach wrestling event in N.C. We’re looking forward to wrestling of all styles and have it grow each year,” said P.J. Smith of NC USA Wrestling.
Wrestlers found out the hard way the footing is a bit uneven. Men wrestled men, children wrestled children, and women were supposed to wrestle women, but most of the females were content to just watch, except Alexis Oakley who wasn’t afraid to mix it up with the boys. “I love the beach. I love wrestling,” said Alexis after winning her first match.
“It’s good for N.C. to have a larger wrestling program. This is like one of the good events they have each year in the summer season to keep wrestling competitive year round,” said wrestling coach Donald Maloy.
Saturday’s competition was more than just wrestling on the beach for bragging rights, as the winner of each division can now call himself Beach Wrestling State Champion.
The turnout was impressive enough that it looks like Carolina Beach will host the Beach Wrestling State Championships again next year.
