Sharks help out Badges for Baseball

Body

The Wilmington Sharks baseball club is trying to give a boost to the Badges for Baseball program. On Wednesday, the team hosted a youth baseball clinic at D.C. Virgo Middle School.

Badges for Baseball is a mentor program that involves the Wilmington Police Department and the Community Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington.

“The police department comes over to mentor our players, and they coach them too,” said David Branch of the Community Boys and Girls Club.

Registration for the league is currently underway for Badges for Baseball for 5 to 18 year olds. Sign ups run thru June 26th.

In fact some of Wednesday’s clinic participants plan to play in the police mentored league. The children got top-notch instruction from the Wilmington Sharks during Wednesday’s clinic.

The Sharks team is comprised of players who currently play college ball, and some of them will be playing minor league ball in the near future.

“Just being with the kids I find that joyful. Just hanging out with them is fun for me,” said Alex Hill who attends UNCW and is playing with the Sharks this summer.

In fact it’s fun for the kids too, and they picked up some great pointers.

“You want to be in an athletic position in all times. You want to be ready for anything, like when you throw you have to have your arm up and extended,” Ryan Harper explained to the kids.

The Sharks are currently 9 – 8 in the Coastal Plains League.

To sign up for Badges for Baseball, you have to stop by the Community Boys & Girls Club of Wilmington.
