Don’t let little pests bug you this summer

Body

Summer is just days away. That means more vacations, barbecues and outdoor fun, but while your trying to relax don’t let the outdoor pests ruin your play days.

Tis the season for summertime pests.

“There about 3,000 mosquito species world wide, and I think about forty or so in New Hanover County,” said Eason Bryan of Mosquito Squad.

To keep the bites to a minimum, Eason says get rid of standing water and clear out your drains. Mosquitoes and water are like a moth to a flame.

Spraying your yard will help reduce the number of mosquitoes, and other pesky critters.

Flea and tick populations multiply during the summer months. Just ask the vets at Wilmington’s Needham Animal Hospital about the calls for preventative medicines. “Oh it doubles, it doubles,” said Christine Burns.

Tick medicines are topical, and flea treatments can now be administered orally. Keeping up with these medicines every month are the best way to prevent a problem.

“If it’s something you do every month, along with your heartworm prevention, and flea control, those are two things that you won’t have to worry about,” Burns said.

But beyond being bothersome to you and your pets, bites can sometimes be dangerous.

“One of the things with children that they tend to scratch and their finger nails are dirty and they can get infections in those mosquito bites,” said Patricia Fields of Cape Fear Hospital.

Bug spray, and keeping the area clean can help minimize the risk of infection.

You can also plant citronella around your yard to help keep the bugs away.

And here’s a tid bit of information, only female mosquitoes actually bite.
