Blueberry Festival set for Saturday

Body

There are plenty of ways to enjoy blueberries, but on a June weekend in the Tar Heel State there’s only one place that enjoys them the most. For the last six years Burgaw has been home to the North Carolina Blueberry Festival.

“Blueberry industry in North Carolina started in Pender County… A guy from New York came down and bought one thousand acres of land to grow blueberries on, paid one dollar an acre for it,” Wayne Batten, festival chair, explained.

So Burgaw decided it was only natural for the town to host a festival. The event has become so popular that each year, 20,000 to 30,000 blueberry lovers pack this small Pender County town.

Even though it takes place in Burgaw, the North Carolina Blueberry Festival extends far beyond Pender County. That’s why farms like Blueberry Hill in Bladen County have been festival supporters since the berry beginning.

“We see it as an asset to us as far as promotion of our product on a local level, a state level, and a national level,” said Chris Barnhill.

It’s good for business too. With so many visitors eager to try different blueberry products, Blueberry Hill workers can’t pack the berries fast enough.
