Perdue’s request to raise taxes has UNCW concerned

Video

Body

House and Senate negotiators are getting closer to Governor Perdue’s request to raise more taxes. They are attempting to pound out a budget that would, among other things, help some state employees keep their jobs.

They are watching those negotiations very closely on the campus of UNCW. Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo told us this is serious business for the university. “We got a report this morning that the House is looking at additional sources of revenue. We are hoping that happens. We are the lowest funded university in the system, so any cuts to us – cut to the bone,” she said.

UNCW’s fate rests with the state legislature. The Senate’s tax proposal would raise money by slapping a sales tax on more services.

The plan also would raise $274 million by taxing electricity at the full sales tax rate. Currently we pay three percent.
