Out-of-towners enjoy the beach for first day of summer
Among the umbrellas and bikinis, you won’t find many locals. When the weather is this hot, many out-of-towners flocked to the coast to ring in the first day of summer. “The water is great, it’s cool, it feels fantastic,” said Virginia’s Marion Powers.
With temperatures in the 90’s, the beach was the best way to beat the heat among other things. Dorothy Blackmon of Raleigh said, “I can deal with the weather as long as a got my hat on I’m good to go.”
Summer begins the day when the suns rays hit the earth directly. The day is known as the summer solstice; the only day of the year with more hours of daylight from sunrise to sunset. Sunday also marked the day of recognition for father’s – many who spent quality time with family soaking up some sun.
“It’s exactly what I wanted,” said Bob Tremalgia of Durham. “I’ve got all my kids around and I’m at the beach. I couldn’t ask for more than that.”
