WPD honors retirees

Body

Nine employees of the Wilmington Police Department were honored at their retirement ceremony Tuesday.

Between them, they have almost 200 years of service with the department.

Those saying goodbye include members of the police force as well as other employees of the department. Each retiree was presented with parting gifts and Chief Ralph Evangelous and some of their friends shared funny stories and kind words about them.

For many, retirement is a bittersweet experience. “I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. All the men and women of the police department working at the police department have been absolutely phenomenal to work with,” said Capt. Bruce Hickman.

“Law enforcement is a huge family, lots of brothers and sisters and there’s captains here that I worked for 25 and 30 years ago, so it’s great,” added Sgt. Melissa Perkins.

Of the nine retirees, Sergeant Melissa Perkins has been with the department the longest at 30 years. She was the second female to ever be promoted to a sergeant at WPD.
