Video software that helps keep an eye out for you

The College of Wilmington can be a busy place. But President Ashley Wallace found a way to keep up with all the chaos; seven video-surveillance cameras he can watch all on one computer. “We have wide-ranging coverage here at the school and it just kind of gives us a sense of satisfaction. Even though we’re not there were still able to see what’s going on at the school,” he said.

Robert Nash installed the cameras and connected them to the internet through software called Rogo, developed locally.

If Wallace is home on a Saturday, he can log into Rogo and watch his students at work. If something goes wrong at the school, the camera sets things straight. “In the heat of the moment their memories may not be correct, but the camera’s memory is always correct,” Wallace said.

The cameras have several other uses.”Nanny cams, pet cams, granny cams for your elderly,” listed Nash. “You can watch vacation homes, your boat down at a marina, whatever you want to watch you can watch.”

If you have a web-enabled phone, you can access the cameras through your cell phone. You can also get e-mail and text alerts if someone enters your home.

Wallace said the cameras have been a life-saver. “The only way you can be successful in a small school, or a small business, is to be acutely involved with that business. If you are away from that business, you still need to know what’s going on and this is a way we can do that.”

The lowest cost USB cameras look like web cams and cost $50. More expensive ones record audio as well as video.

You can install the system yourself or have someone like Robert Nash install it for you, which costs $50. The service itself costs $20 a month. You can contact Robert at rnash@ec.rr.com or at 910-622-5266.
