Staying safe in the water this Fourth of July

Body

The ocean is a tempting place, but can be a scary and powerful place too. Wrightsville Beach is different from other area beaches because it has piers and deep troughs that can be dangerous.

“You can go from waist deep water to chest deep in one step if you fall into the trough,” said Jon Mauney of Wrightsville Beach Ocean Rescue. Mauney is keeping his eyes wide open this holiday weekend, looking out for young children who may wander away from their parents.

“It can be a split second where a flash rip can pull, and now that child is out to sea and needs help,” Mauney said.

The ocean rescue team warns swimmers of how dangerous the water is every day by hanging colored flags from each lifeguard stand. Mauney added, “Our biggest thing we ask is to swim in front of a lifeguard.” Staying close to the lifeguards means they’ll be able to respond quicker if something were to happen.

From the ocean rescue team to all those enjoying this holiday weekend – “We would like everyone to have a safe Fourth, no matter where they are. Whether they’re on the beach or at home, and support our troops who are away from their families.”

The ocean rescue team also wants to remind anyone setting off fireworks on the beach to clean up after themselves. Some of the wires can be dangerous if you were to step on them.
