Currie holds first ever parade on Fourth

Fourth of July celebrations have been a little leaner in many cities across the country, but while some are cutting back, one Pender County town held it’s first ever Fourth of July parade.

The Currie parade all started over a love of dance.

Roshawn McIntyre is the director of the Integra Steppers, and she was looking for a local venue for her students to perform. ”We all got together and we decided to have a Currie parade to let people know that there is great talent, excellent talent, above and beyond in the community of Currie,” she said.

She approached Larry Forboro at Larry’s Tire and Auto and together they organized Currie’s first ever Fourth of July parade.

The parade kicked off at the corners of Brinson and Borough roads. The parade spanned a mile, ending at Larry’s on Blueberry Road.

Community groups came from all over Pender and New Hanover counties to take part in the new parade, including Moore’s Creek Missionary Baptist Church, Ms. Rocky Point Harvest Festival Queen, and the Port City Wheelers.

“We’re a real nice motorcycle club out of Wilmington, and we were glad to come up here and participate with Currie in their parade,” said Reggie Hagans of the Port City Wheelers.

Hundreds of people filled the streets to watch. “We’re very blessed and happy that we finally have our own parade, and it’s just amazing to be out here on the Fourth,” said Currie resident Terri Newkirk.
