Consuming vegetables can help lower blood pressure

Video

Body

We know vegetables are good for us – a new study finds vegetable proteins may actually lower a person’s blood pressure.

Researchers examined data from over 4500 people living in the US, the UK, China, and Japan. They found that eating approximately 5 percent more glutamic acid was linked to a small decrease in both systolic blood and diastolic blood pressure.

The average blood pressure drop of, from 1 to 3 units may not seem large, but it represents an important reduction. According to the American Heart Association, if all Americans lowered their blood pressure by this amount, more than 26,000 lives would be saved from death due to stroke and heart disease.

This may also explain how the DASH eating plan works to lower blood pressure. The DASH eating plan is recommended by the National Institutes of Health and the American Heart Association for people with high blood pressure.

While a major feature of the plan is limiting intake of sodium, it also encourages the consumption vegetables, whole grains, nuts and beans.
