Taxi driver recounts armed robbery: ‘He could have shot me if he wanted to’

What started as an ordinary pickup for taxi driver Dawn Clark quickly turned into a nightmare car ride. "I hadn’t even gotten on Market Street but 200 feet maybe," recounts Clark. "He bent down to the right of him and pulls out a gun and puts it in my face, he goes ‘This is not a joke I will shoot.’"

Westin to build hotel in Wilmington

A Westin hotel is on its way to Wilmington by 2021. Starwood Hotels and Resorts, which owns the brand, announced its intentions to bring the hotel operator to Military Cutoff Road in the next several years.

State expected to seek death penalty against convicted killer

The New Hanover County District Attorney’s office is expected to formally announce Monday it will seek the death penalty for James Opelton Bradley. The convicted killer, charged with first-degree murder in the presumed death of Shannon Rippy Van Newkirk, was indicted by a grand jury on a second first-degree murder charge in December.  Bradley is also charged with the murder of Elisha Tucker, whose body was found wrapped in trash bags on April 29, 2014, while investigators …

Commissioner continues push against tax money for non-US citizens

The recent arrest of a non-US citizen for a deadly hit and run in Wilmington prompted new questions from the community. A woman wrote New Hanover County Commission Chair Woody White to express her frustration this man was in our country, and that tax money was being spent on his legal proceedings.
