Outsider will probe harassment claims at Oak Island police department

The town of Oak Island has hired an outside company to investigate allegations of sexual harassment and discrimination within the police department. Kilpatrick & Associates, a Chapel Hill human resources company, will conduct the investigation. <br>”I think that protects the integrity of everyone,” Oak Island Mayor Johnie Vereen said.

The Wilmington area’s unemployment rate rose to 5.5 percent in June from 5.2 percent in May, according to figures released Wednesday from the Bureau of Labor Statistics in Washington.

Wilmington woman charged with felony child abuse

An 18-year-old Wilmington woman was charged with felony child abuse after her 4-month-old baby went to the emergency room with fractures and internal injuries, according to the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
