Pender resident named CRC vice chairman

Pender County’s Joan Weld has been elected vice chairman of the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission, the 15-member board that manages development in the state’s 20 coastal counties.<br>Weld, who has served on the CRC since 2003, is a former assistant secretary with the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Wilmington man matches all five numbers in the Carolina Cash 5

Fred Hammond of Wilmington couldn’t believe it when he looked at his lottery ticket from July 15. He checked the numbers at least 10 times, thinking “this can’t be right,” according to a news release from the N.C. Education Lottery.He’d matched all five numbers in the Carolina Cash 5, and his ticket was worth $376,821.

Cab driver struggles to recover after wreck paralyzes him

On a sunny afternoon last month, David Rowell had a lot to live for but couldn’t save himself. The Yellow Cab driver crashed head on into a van on Wrightsville Avenue and his taxi burst into flames.<br>”I heard people saying, ‘get out, get out,’ but I didn’t move,” he said.
