Wilmington 5th-grader might have foiled abduction

A fifth-grader at Forest Hills Elementary School fought off an apparent abduction attempt Tuesday as she walked home on the first day of classes, officials said.

Pender, Bladen, Duplin and Onlsow counties are under a tornado watch until 5 p.m. today. <br>As of 8 a.m., the National Weather Service in Wilmington had received several reports from spotters and law enforcement about sightings of funnel clouds across Southeastern North Carolina.

Kopp named head of N.C. Association of County Commissioners

New Hanover County Commissioner Bill Kopp is now president of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.<br>Kopp was sworn in to the office on Aug. 23<br>during the association’s annual conference. The association represents the state’s 100 counties and lobbies state and federal lawmakers and agencies on the counties’ behalf.
