Candidates for N.C. governor debate

Durham | North Carolina’s two major-party candidates for governor continued to spar over plans to open the coast to oil and natural gas drilling Tuesday night during the first live televised debate of the general election.<br>Democrat Beverly Perdue and Republican Pat McCrory faced off in a televised debate hosted by WTVD in Durham.

Wilmington council approves higher buildings downtown

The north side of downtown Wilmington could one day be home to skyscrapers that dwarf PPD’s headquarters, according to regulations approved Tuesday by the Wilmington City Council.<br>But new buildings in the city’s historic core would remain on the current scale, or smaller.

At Mosley, a fresh start for both students and school

Mary S. Mosley Performance Learning Center Principal Jerry Oates kicked off the school year with a funeral.<br>Dressed in all black Tuesday night, Oates decided to lay to rest the “Can’t brothers” by placing the words “I Can’t” and “You Can’t” into a box and burying them during the school’s orientation.
