Wilmington councilwoman honored for transportation work

Wilmington councilwoman Laura Padgett was recently named the winner of the inaugural National League of Cities Excellence in Transportation Award.<br>The longest-serving member of the Wilmington City Council, Padgett has long been involved in transportation issues at local, regional and national levels.

Harmful bacteria levels found at beaches

State environmental officials found potentially harmful bacteria levels Saturday at two beaches in Banks Channel around the Wrightsville Beach area.<br>The bacteria levels exceed the state and federal standard for recreational contact, according to a news release.

Area buses filling with gas-price refugees

If Andrew Miceli wasn’t on the bus Friday, he would have been riding a scooter or hitchhiking, he said.<br>He, along with friend Frank Lindsay, took Wave Transit’s Brunswick Connector bus from downtown Wilmington to work at an auto body shop in Leland.

Crossroads: WIlmington area drivers getting bolder, more obnoxious

In the past several weeks, I’ve seen a car going at least 60 mph down Castle Street – a 25 mph zone. <br>I’ve seen two young men on foot dart in front of traffic on Market Street near The Olive Garden, barely missing getting hit. <br>I’ve seen a man in a wheelchair sitting in the median in the center of a busy stretch of Carolina Beach Road.
