No-name storm hits beaches harder than Hanna

Topsail Beach | The no-name storm that drenched the region Thursday caused severe erosion problems at several area beaches, and in some cases, it was worse than the damages reported after Tropical Storm Hanna.<br>Thursday’s storm washed away up to 12 feet of sand and dunes on parts of Topsail Beach, said Town Manager Steve Foster.

County ordered to grant more student transfers

After reviewing the district’s case over the past month, the N.C. Department of Public Instruction is requiring the New Hanover County schools to grant more transfers, or it may withhold some of the district’s Title I funds as a penalty, said Charlotte Duren, the state schools’ No Child Left Behind specialist.
