N.C. unemployment rate rose in September

North Carolina’s unemployment rate rose to 7 percent in September, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics said Tuesday.<br>That was up from 6.9 percent in August, but up from 4.7 percent in September 2007.<br>The jobless rate for the Wilmington area will be out later this month.

Olympics equestrian course designer works on local horse show

Steve Stephens started riding and jumping horses at age 9. By the time he was 16, in 1966, he was riding professionally. When school wasn’t in session, he’d go to a farm to ride and train as many as 16 horses in a day. He was also a member of the U.S. equestrian team.

Wilson’s Restaurant to close after decade in business

The slumping local economy claimed another victim Tuesday as Wilson’s Restaurant closed. Larry Wilson, president of the 30,000-square-foot facility on New Centre Drive in Wilmington, said he decided Sunday night to close the restaurant.
