Oak Island | The contaminated dirt that helped boost the new Oak Island police station’s price tag by $2.2 million is gone. <br>Within the next couple of weeks, workers should also have the beleaguered stormwater drainage system there fixed and can start putting in a much-needed parking lot.

Husband of missing woman arrested after remains ID’d

The husband of a Columbus County woman missing since 2005 was arrested today, a day after her remains were positively identified.<br>Jamie Lee Dowless, husband of Carol Marie Batten Dowless, was charged with murder in the death of his 26-year-old wife, Sheriff Chris Batten said in a release.

Centro Latino reopens at new location

Bienvenidos, amigos!<br>Centro Latino, a resource center for local immigrants run by the nonprofit Amigos Internacional, has relocated and reopened at the St. Mary Catholic Church campus.<br>The center, which is now operating out of a one-room office at 320 S. 5th Ave., reopened in its new location at the end of September.
