Sheriff modifies procedures for emergency response team

Policies and procedures in place the night Peyton Strickland was shot to death through a front door by a New Hanover County Sheriff’s emergency response team member did not cause his death, the sheriff said. That doesn’t mean the procedures couldn’t benefit from some changes.

Bridge replacement will block N.C. 179 starting Monday

Beginning at 9 a.m. Monday, N.C. 179 at Jinny’s Branch will be closed to traffic until mid-May as the N.C. Department of Transportation constructs a new bridge on the route between Shallotte and Ocean Isle Beach.

Bridge crash victim was pregnant with fourth child

Myia Shepard was killed Wednesday in a traffic accident on Cape Fear Memorial Bridge. She was six months pregnant with her fourth child, a girl tentatively named Amira Elizabeth, according to her mother, Sandra Jennings.

Cowher to deliver fall commencement address at N.C. State

RALEIGH | Former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Bill Cowher will deliver the fall commencement address at North Carolina State University, his alma mater.<br>The ceremony is scheduled for Dec. 17 at the RBC Center in Raleigh.
