Do Some Good: Volunteer training in Brunswick County

Brunswick Family Assistance is planning a volunteer training night from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Jan. 27. Light refreshments will be served.<br>The nonprofit will demonstrate how volunteers can help in its food pantry and Family Thrift Store.

Southport honors Dr. King with a celebration

About 60 people met at the International Longshoreman Association Hall in Southport on Sunday to pay tribute to slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Before the event, about half got into the spirit by marching around town and clapping and singing.

Two adults, two children die in house fire south of Burgaw

Brunswick soldier’s ‘Art for Afghanistan’ gives troops a break from war

Tamara Gabbard, whose family lives in Brunswick County, has been in the Middle East for nine months as an Army private taking photos in the desert. And on Wednesday she plans to offer her fellow troops a break from war in what she calls an “escape into someone else’s creation.”
