Leland is latest to ban sex offenders from parks

At its Thursday meeting, the Leland Town Council unanimously passed an ordinance banning registered sex offenders from the town’s public parks. The ordinance states that anyone who breaks it will be subject to a fine of at least $500 per offense and/or 30 days in jail.

Homeless fill shelters as cold grips Southeastern N.C.

One cold night more than a year ago Milton McBride didn’t have anywhere to stay. So he went to a soup kitchen and ate as much as he could, hoping a full stomach might make sleeping easier.<br>Then McBride and several others got a blanket, found an abandoned house and huddled together for warmth.
