Sunday’s mountain bike event at Blue Clay Road Park

Monday, February 9th, 2009

More than a hundred cyclists participated in Sunday’s mountain bike event at the Blue Clay Road Park in New Hanover County.

Erol Caglarcan raced Sunday afternoon, but he does not go as fast as everyone else due to the camera on his helmet. “It is a high definition camera that I’ve mounted on a helmet and I have a counter weight on this side and I use the camera to film mountain bike trails and the quality is excellent.”

You can take a look for yourself, on Erol’s website. It is www.sirbikesalot.com. In the meantime, WWAY took the News Channel 3 sports camera out on the Blue Clay Road mountain bikes trails during the competition Sunday afternoon. You can view it here.

The younger guys only had to ride one lap Sunday afternoon. A lap is 6 miles. Beginners had to go 2 laps. The experts completed 4 laps for a total of 24 miles.

Expert Travis Liberman captured first place with a winning time of 2 hours 38 minutes.

NC sheriff sets meeting on video gambling woes

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Body

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan is holding a news conference to discuss new video gambling laws and how they affect enforcement actions.

Lt. Ross Dillingham said the news conference is scheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. He said Duncan has fielded calls from residents talking about people spending all their money in one sitting at video gambling machines, found at convenience stores and grocery retailers throughout the county.

Video poker machines were outlawed in the state in 2006. In their place, sweepstakes-style games began popping up, where a customer would use a computer game with the likeness of a slot
machine to determine if they’d won money.

State Alcohol Law Enforcement officials began raiding the businesses, but companies manufacturing the games got an injunction against the raids.
