Man hit and robbed on Red Cross Street

A man was assaulted and robbed while walking from the Salvation Army to Ruth’s Grocery on Red Cross Street early Saturday morning. The victim reported that he was approached by two men while walking in the 300 block of Red Cross Street at 3:22 a.m. Saturday, according to Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Lucy Crockett.

Bad economy making Cape Fear area libraries a popular stop

Librarians in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties all report at least a modest upsurge in circulation and a notable increase in patrons using their free computer terminals. In part, it’s because the library provides good, cheap entertainment: free books, CDs, DVDs, and VHS tapes on loan, free storytimes for children.

Life Stories: Merritt a pioneer in fast food with Wilmington drive-in

James “Jimmy” Merritt was attempting to give his wife, Margaret, a good night kiss, when they lost their balance and fell, sending both into hip surgery.Their granddaughter Donna Garner remembers visiting them in a rehab facility nearly 10 years ago and the teasing of a nurse.
