Wilmington’s newest community opens Thursday

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Despite an economic downtown, development of Wilmington’s newest multi-use community is moving forward.

Autumn Hall along Eastwood Road put three lots under contract in January, which is more than developers expected.

The community’s first family is moving into their new home Thursday. Autumn Hall will also include eleven parks, a nature trail, several fitness facilities, and retail stores.

Developer, Raiford Trask, is happy to see the interest they have received. “A lot of good people in the city went out on a limb for us and Autumn Hall was just a sheet of paper and it was a little bit scary because it was big and it was serious change to Eastwood Road but now I think the community is really happy with what we’re doing.”

Autumn Hall is expected to have 300 single family homes and 200 multi-family residences. The expected completion date for the entire community is 2010.

Two people are dead today, and New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies are calling the deaths suspicious, meaning that they didn’t die of natural causes.

The house where they were found was on Westridge Court in Ogden. Investigators say a neighbor called the sheriff’s department asking an officer to come check on the folks who lived in house number 424.

Deputies entered the house and found two people dead. This was around 10:30 this morning. Since then, detectives have been on scene investigating.

The names are not yet being released pending the notification of family. Deputies would also not confirm the relationship of the two people or their gender, only that they lived in the house on Westridge.

Local social web site adding members daily

Wednesday, February 4th, 2009

Body

A Wilmington social site is helping people connect on a local level.

Similar to popular global social networks like Myspace, Facebook, and Linkedin, you can blog, chat, and send messages at 3rdstreetplaza.com, but the big difference is, it’s all about this area.

3rdstreetplaza.com member Lisa Layman said, “I can actually blog and the information is more pertinent because it is within my own community.”

Lisa Layman is an active member of 3rdstreetplaza.com and she promotes her online dining business on the site. It seems to make her work much easier. “The average business person nowadays is updating constantly at least five profiles online and the 3rd street actually brings the Wilmington community to you instead of you having to go out and spend a lot of time trying to find individuals in the business community.”

Along with helping the business community, the site keeps members up-to-date with upcoming local events.

There’s a bit of a story behind the website’s name. 100 years ago, the community used to go to the corner of 3rd and Dock to socialize and network. It was known throughout Wilmington as the 3rd Street Plaza.

3rdstreetplaza.com is a modern-day version of the same concept. You can post pictures, upload videos, and join groups with your neighbors.

The website was launched just a few weeks ago and it already has nearly one hundred members.

The Wilmington community seems to be quickly catching on to a site that’s a great place to find a date, find a job, or find a friend.
