Man charged with punching police officer in the face

A man who authorities say punched a Wilmington police officer in the face was taken to jail Sunday morning and then released on bond.

Two men are dead after an early morning crash between a taxi and motorcycle on Eastwood Road.

26-year-old William Wilson Ward Jr. and 49-year-old Shukil Mohamed Rahibaux are both dead after the crash. Police sayid Ward was speeding on a motorcycle down Eastwood Road. He hit a taxi making a left off Rogersville Road. Both vehicles caught fire.

Police said the impact was so extreme that after the fire was extinguished, the motorcycle driver was found inside the taxi.

Eastwood Road was closed for more than 5 hours while clearing the wreckage.

Rahimbaux, the taxi driver, owned Kat’s Taxi in Wilmington.

Ward had been cited earlier this month for driving without a license.

Visitation Sunday for Officer Matthews

The Wilmington police officer killed in an on-duty car crash this week, will be laid to rest in his home state of Pennsylvania.

This weekend, Officer Richard Matthews will be honored here in Wilmington. Visitation is set for Sunday from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, at Port City Community Church on Vision Drive.

A funeral service will take place Monday at 1:00 pm, at St. Mark’s Catholic Church on Eastwood Road.

Final services and burial will be conducted in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Officer Matthews died early Wednesday morning. He was responding as back-up for another officer, when he swerved to avoid a box in the roadway, lost control, and hit a tree.

Fans were asked to take a minute to remember Officer Matthews during a moment of silence at Saturday’s Wilmington Sea Dawgs Basketball game. The team will hold another moment of silence before Sunday’s game.

The annual charity basketball game, between Wilmington Police, and New Hanover County Sheriff’s Deputies has been postponed due to Officer Matthews’ death.

The Big Buddy Shootout was scheduled for Sunday, but will be re-scheduled. Tickets for the Big Buddy Shootout are good for the Wilmington Sea Dawgs game Sunday. The same tickets will also be honored when the charity game is rescheduled.
