Weather service warns of increased fire danger today

The combination of increasingly dry air and gusty westerly winds in wake of a cold front that crossed the region earlier will produce a heightened wildfire risk from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, according to the National Weather Service in Wilmington.

Lawmakers assigned committees for session

Raleigh | Work now can truly begin in the legislature.On Wednesday, House Speaker Joe Hackney, D-Orange, announced committee assignments for the session, which followed last week’s Senate committee assignments. Cape Fear region members fared well.

Boy, 11, struck by car in Kings Grant neighborhood

An 11-year-old boy was in critical condition Wednesday night at New Hanover Regional Medical Center after he was struck by a vehicle in the Kings Grant neighborhood, a N.C. Highway Patrol trooper said.

Sheriff’s office looking for missing man, 25

The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a missing man.Christopher Thomas Reese, 25, was last seen Jan. 22 at his home on Pine Forest Road in Wilmington, according to a release Wednesday from Deputy Charles Smith, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Former Marine given five years in Pender child sex case

A former Marine from Cherry Point was sentenced to five years in prison after he tried to solicit sexual acts from an undercover law enforcement officer posing as an underage girl, the Pender County Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
