Another NC farmers market to accept food stamps

REIDSVILLE, N.C. — The Rockingham County Farmers Market is the latest in North Carolina to begin accepting electronic benefits transfer cards, traditionally known as food stamps.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported that the Rockingham County market will begin accepting EBTs in May. Other farmers markets in the state also accept the cards.

The market is able to accept the new payment form because of Leaflight, a nonprofit organization that tries to link farmers with the needy.

Shoppers will swipe their EBT cards and receive tokens worth one dollar each to buy fruits and vegetables. Farmers then redeem the
tokens with the market manager.

Officials say the new system will also allow customers to use debit and credit cards.

Some downtown businesses will be without power Monday

A few downtown Wilmington businesses will be in the dark Monday.

Repairs to the Water Street bulkhead are almost complete, but not without a third power outage for nearby businesses.

Power will be shut off Monday from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The planned outage is a safety precaution for crews while they install a transformer.

While store owners said the timing is bad, a spokesperson for Progress Energy said the company is operating under the city’s schedule. The city surveyed business owners before construction began.

There is no plan to reimburse owners for the lost business.

RALEIGH — Beverly Perdue gives her first speech as governor to the Legislature as she tries to manage North Carolina’s worst budget problems in a generation.

Perdue is slated to deliver the biennial State of the State address Monday night to a joint session of the General Assembly in Raleigh.

The televised speech is expected to be frank about troubles facing the state and what to do to keep citizens working now and in the future.

Perdue already has ordered spending cuts of up to 9 percent in state agencies to narrow a projected $2.2 billion shortfall this year. She’ll release her two-year budget next week.

Perdue has heard many State of the State addresses as a former legislator and lieutenant governor.
