Here Now: Explorer post taught law enforcement skills, values

If all went as planned, a group of former Explorer Scouts held an appreciation dinner last night for retired Wilmington police officer John Winecoff.Master Police Officer Winecoff was the city’s first mounted police officer, starting the program in 1988. He retired in 2001 after 30 years on the job.

When he was 5 or 6 (he’s not sure which), his father gave him a child’s mythology book.“I’ve been in love with Greece ever since,” said Ledbetter, a sales representative at Bob King Volkswagen.
