Trip It can help plan your vacation

Friday, March 6th, 2009

Body

Spring break is right around the corner and summer vacation will be here before you know it.

Planning a trip typically involves a lot of paperwork. Flight confirmation numbers, rental car reservations, Mapquest directions, and the list goes on.

A website called “Trip It” can turn that chaos into order.

Laura Bay and her kids just got back from an extensive trip to Australia and New Zealand. “With the rental car and the different hotels I was staying at, plus all the plane tickets, it ended up being a lot of paperwork.”

After she looked at tripit.com, she said, “I’m a very unorganized person generally so, having it all in one place certainly would have been helpful, especially in such an involved trip because we traveled to so many different places and stayed in so many different areas, and I had a rental car for part of it.”

The site is free and simple to use. Once you sign up, just forward confirmation e-mails, like your flight information to plans at tripit.com.

Your name and reservations will register in their system and translate into your personal itinerary. As you book additional accommodations, such as hotel and car, your itinerary will update automatically.

You can add personal plans like dinner at a restaurant with a link to the menu and prices. You can also share your itinerary with friends.

A cool feature on the site the closeness alert. If someone you know is vacationing near by, you’ll be alerted you so you can meet up.

At one point in her trip, Laura lost her flight information and had to use her laptop to prove her reservations to the airline. “I had to go through my entire e-mail list to find the e-mail confirmation.”

Laura said next time she plans a trip, she is going to use tripit.com. “To have it all in one place certainly would have been easier and less stressful.”

Another selling point for this site is that you can be as lazy or interactive with planning as you want. You can determine every step of your trip and add photos and comments, or you can just keep track of basic flight and hotel information.

Two teens in Brunswick County may face arson charges after starting five fires Thursday.

The first fire began around noon in Boiling Spring Lakes. Within three hours, fire fighters battled five fires, some involving trash.

Two boys, 15 and 16 years old, are the alleged fire starters. Police said the boys go to South Brunswick High School, and had been skipping school when the fires were started.

“These kids were probably just on their way home and a crazy thought gets into their head, and next thing you know we’ve got millions of dollars worth of equipment, man power and people risking their lives to stop forest fires,” said Chief Emmett Ballree of the Boiling Spring Lakes Police.

The investigation was turned over to the state forestry service, who could charge the teens with arson.
