UPDATE: Man arrested in connection with Big Lots robbery

A vehicle description given to New Hanover County sheriff’s deputies by employees at the Big Lots store, 7316 Market St., led to the speedy arrest of a man in connection with the armed robbery of the store shortly before 1 p.m. Wednesday, according to Deputy Charles G. Smith, spokesman for the sheriff’s office.

Container vessel to make first port call

The Independent Pursuit is coming to Wilmington, filled with stuff.The 550-foot container ship will pull into the Port of Wilmington on Thursday, marking Virginia-based Independent Container Line Ltd.’s first weekly call to Wilmington. The company will carry cargo between Wilmington and Northern Europe and the United Kingdom.

Pair arrested at Walmart after trying to return items reported stolen

Management of the Walmart Supercenter at 5135 Carolina Beach Road called the sheriff’s office after two men attempted to return items that had reportedly been stolen from that store and the Walmart at 5226 Sigmon Road.

Update: Body found in Cape Fear River

Body

A boater made a startling discovery Tuesday afternoon. A body was discovered floating in the Cape Fear River near the battleship around 5:00 p.m.

Firefighters pulled out the body across the river from the convention center construction site.

Sheriff’s detectives have confirmed the identity of the body to be Robert Delford Brown, 78 years old of Wilmington. The medical examiner has concluded there was no sign of trauma and detectives do not suspect foul play. The cause of death has been ruled an accidental drowning. The family has been notified.
