New Hanover to lay off 27 county employees Tuesday

On Tuesday, 27 New Hanover County employees will lose their jobs.County Manager Bruce Shell will meet with department heads Tuesday morning to discuss the layoff plans, part of the county’s efforts to fill a budget hole dug by the struggling economy.The layoffs will help the county save $1.6 million.

Crossroads: Cape Fear Memorial Bridge makes AAA list of shame

The 1969 bridge ranks No. 10 in the state on AAA’s substandard bridge list. The annual study takes structural conditions into account and assigns extra weight to traffic volumes to highlight bridges affecting the most motorists.
