Myrtle Beach to reconsider loitering rules

MYRTLE BEACH — Myrtle Beach officials say they’ll reconsider new ordinances aimed at preventing loitering at bike rallies as residents complain it also bans tailgating.

City spokesman Mark Kruea told The Sun News of Myrtle Beach that people cannot cook or occupy the parking lots for anything other than parking.

The city passed 15 new rules last year that included a ban on alcohol consumption in parking lots. Turning parking lots into outdoor restaurants, bars and parties was also banned.

Mayor John Rhodes said he hoped to make sports venues exempt from the anti-loitering ordinance.

The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association has moved its spring rally to North Carolina in part because of restrictive ordinances in Myrtle Beach. Several rallies have been held in and around Myrtle Beach each year.

Students who attend an alternative school in Pender County will be attending different schools next year. The school board in Pender County has agreed to close Pender Success Academy.

With the school district facing major budget cuts from the state level, closing the school is due to financial strains. The move will save close to a million dollars in operation costs to house the more than 40 students.

In the fall, both students and staff will be absorbed back into traditional schools.
