‘Dateline’ traces Wilmington unsolved murder cases in Friday TV show

Wilmington-based company to expand

A local company has plans to expand.

Castle Branch is an employment screening firm based in Wilmington. 150 people currently work there. The company’s new 32,000 square-foot facility will make room for up to 130 more employees.

The facility is located near Mayfaire, and includes a high-tech research and call center.

A grand opening celebration is planned for next week.

Topsail Humane Society closing Friday

After some recent zoning disputes with the county, the Topsail Humane Society is going to shut down.

Director Kathy Lewis said the county notified her early this week that the shelter is in violation of zoning laws. On Thursday, she told WWAY that she is tired of fighting to provide a free service for the county.

Lewis said the shelter will close Friday at noon, leaving around twenty animals homeless.

Whats Happening: April 10-12

Do you like to laugh? Would you like to raise money for cancer research? Then you need to take a break during the workweek and head to Brown Coat Pub and Theater in downtown Wilmington. Relay 4 Laughs is a festival that raises money for Relay for Life. Local comedians entertain for free, but of course, donations are appreciated. It runs for the next two Wednesday nights at 10:00 p.m.

It is Easter weekend and it will certainly look like it Friday at Battleship Park. Kids between the ages of two and nine can participate in a fun-filled Easter egg hunt. The cost is five dollars per child. Pre-registration is required so call (910) 251-5797. The hunts begin at 9:30, 11:30 and 2:00 p.m.

If you can not get enough of those colorful eggs, head over to Hugh MacRae Park Saturday morning for the Wilmington Jaycee’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt. The hunt starts at 10:00 a.m., so you may want to get there early. Children up to the age of ten are invited. The hunt is free.

You can enjoy the outdoors this weekend in historic Southport. The city is holding its Spring Fest at Franklin Square Park. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday – 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday.

While you are in Brunswick County, stop by Holden Beach for Bark at the Park. It is the Third Annual Dog Walk to benefit Easter Seals. It begins at 10:00 a.m. Get there for registration at 9:30 a.m. Meet under the bridge.

Enjoy locally grown fruits and vegetables – the Riverfront Farmers Market opens this weekend. The farmers market takes place every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. from now until December 19th. It is located on North Water Street between Market and Princess Streets.

In the spirit of the holiday, an “eggstraordinary” site will fill the air Saturday. Thirty thousand plastic eggs will be dropped onto the Ashley High School football field. You can get there at 10:00 a.m. – the first drop is at 10:45 a.m. There will also be carnival games, fire trucks and more. The event is for kids twelve and under.

If you own a motorcycle, or know someone who does, head to Carolina Coast Harley Davidson Saturday for the 4th Annual Officer Down Ride. Proceeds benefit officers and firefighters injured in the line of duty. Depending on what you sign up, the registration fee is $25 or $35. Passengers pay ten dollars. The ride begins at 11:00 a.m.
