Area hotels hope convention center boosts business

It’s not business as usual at area hotels. Companies are cutting their budgets left and right, and one of the first things to go is non-essential travel.

“We know its tough times, we want you to remember us when it gets good again,” said Stephen Williams of the Hilton Riverfront.

Hotel representatives said groups that usually hold convention or conference meetings in hotel meeting rooms are thinking twice before booking too far in advance.

“We all know that certain companies are making cut backs, so it’s nice if we can maybe bring the group in, lower their minimum, or at least tie in a lower rate for the rooms,” said Nicole Jones of Shell Island Resort.

With the new convention center under construction right down the street, area hotels say the new facility will actually boost their business.

The city of Wilmington has rolled out the new logo for the convention center.

The opening date of the new convention center is still up in the air, but construction is expected to wrap in May of 2010.

CFCC students win first place for building green design

Some students at Cape Fear Community College are officially the best when it comes to going green.

A group of architectural students won first place in a state-wide green building competition. Hundreds of students in state universities and community colleges competed to build the most affordable, energy efficient multi-family development.

Many hours when into the project, and in the end, the students said the hard work paid off. “The whole idea is just to do things smarter. Everybody gets a little complacent out in the building world because folks may not want to us a new product because they don’t know how to use it and implement that into the building process,” said CFCC architectural student Patrick Gorham. “That was one of the big instances behind the competition is to find some products.”

The CFCC team beat out teams from bigger schools like Duke, NC State and ECU. The prize-winning plans will come to life. The homes will be built by next year in Raleigh for low income families.

Making Earth Day more than just today

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

Reduce, reuse, recycle…concepts many pledge to live by on this year’s Earth Day.

The fight for a cleaner environment sometimes comes from a small source, like the students at Murray Middle School in New Hanover County who spread the word about Earth Day among each other.

Students who are part of the Green Team hosted an Earth Day fair to encourage others to become more eco-friendly.

“If we preserve the Earth now, then we can stay here and make it better over more generations,” said 6th grader Savannah Fonvielle. “We are just trying to inform our age and older that if you don’t recycle then some things can happen bad.”

“We are trying to look at things a bit differently. Stop wasting so much; we don’t need new, new, new. We are trying to re-purpose and reuse things so that they don’t end up in a landfill,” said Murray Middle School teacher Damaris O’Connor.

Just about every student took the time to sign a pledge to make an effort to help better our environment.

Students at UNCW also used the day to sway some support for the Earth. Dozens gathered to share tips and ideas to inspire awareness and appreciation for our environment.

“It’s always important every time of the year, but on Earth Day in particular it’s good to draw everyone’s attention to it,” said Stan Hearts, UNCW’s Substantiality Committee Chair.

With money so tight these days, learning how to reuse or reduce our impact on the environment may not be a bad idea.

Just take a lesson from those kids at Murray Middle School.
