Checking in with new CEO of former Cape Fear Bank

When First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Charleston took over Cape Fear Bank on Good Friday, it marked the end of a tumultuous couple of years for the Wilmington-based bank.That included a fight for its control, led by Burlington investor Maurice Koury, and the resulting exit of then-CEO R. Cameron Coburn.

Vehicle hits pedestrian at 14th and Wooster

A pedestrian was transported to the hospital Saturday night after being hit by a vehicle at the corner of Wooster and 14th streets.The accident happened about 8:15 p.m. A crowd of neighbors gathered at the corner just after the accident , while EMS workers placed the injured pedestrian on a stretcher.

Who’s got the best chowder in town?

Michael’s Seafood Restaurant in Carolina Beach won the 13th annual Pleasure Island Chowder Cookoff.Eight restaurants from the island and Monkey Junction competed in the cookoff, held Saturday in Carolina Beach.Michael’s was the crowd favorite and judges’ choice, receiving the most votes in both categories.

9/11 victim’s father travels with message of hope

Two buses crash, sending 5 students to hospital

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Five students were taken to the hospital after a fender bender between two New Hanover County school buses on U.S. 421, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. One bus was halted at a stop sign when the second hit its rear bumper on U.S. 421 near Silva Terra Drive at 3:53 p.m., said Sgt. T.T. Daniels.
