Higher and higher… jobless rate continues to rise

Friday, April 17th, 2009

Body

More than 492,000 people in our state are out of work. The state jobless rate has risen to 10.8 percent, up from 10.7 percent in February, which was already the highest rate in recorded history.

Across the state, the number of people out of work continues to rise.

For the past six months, the state unemployment number has steadily jumped pass the national average, which was 8.5 percent.

When it comes to our part of the state, most local counties’ unemployment numbers are higher than even the state average of 10.8 percent. New Hanover is the only county below the state average.

That means more people are looking to the Employment Security Commission for assistance, like David Oldfield, who was recently laid off. “Coming in here not knowing if I would get anything, I’ll be walking out knowing I’ll be getting this much money per week and that’s good.”

Until things do turn around, David Oldfield is hoping for the best. “I’ll just go out, look for a new job and try to get myself back on my feet.”

The process of filling out a claim for unemployment benefits takes about an hour. You can either submit your claim in person, over the phone or online. It takes about two weeks for approval to receive benefits.

Bobcats training camp will not come to Wilmington

Friday, April 17th, 2009

The NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats have lost millions of dollars in their first five seasons of play. Last summer the team laid off 38 employees. It appears there will be more cost cutting next season, and it will have an effect on Wilmington.

The Bobcats traditionally hold a week long training camp on the campus of UNC-Wilmington every October, but head coach Larry Brown says the 2009 training camp will probably stay at the team’s practice facility in Charlotte to save money.

The announcement caught the UNCW athletic department off guard. They had not been contacted by the Bobcats.

Steve fed up with tax system in this week’s Rondo Words

April 15th has come and gone. Did you get your taxes done in time? Did you pay someone to do them for you?

The IRS reports about 60 percent of us do. It’s just gotten too darned complicated. Just ask any number of Obama cabinet nominees.

Here are some factoids from the IRS itself:
– Individuals and businesses spend about 7.6 billion hours a year complying with IRS filing requirements.
– Since 2001, there have been more than 3,200 changes to the tax code. That’s an average of more than one a day.
– This may be the most amazing number of all, the US tax code contains 3.7 million words or so. By the IRS’ best estimate, that translates to more than 70,000 pages.

There are 500 sheets of paper in a ream. Multiply this by almost fifteen, and you have the equivalent of the US tax code; that’s 75,000 pages.

It’s absolutely ridiculous and out of control.

We deserve a simpler tax system.

There have been attempts in the past but you can see where they’ve gotten us. It’s time for some political bravery, lest the whole tax code come tumbling down upon us under the sheer weight of its complexity.
