Confederate Memorial Day in Whiteville

Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Body

The courthouse came alive in Whiteville Saturday morning for a ceremony that was geared toward the recognition of Confederate veterans.

“Our biggest goal today is making sure citizens and residents of Columbus County know about their heritage and that includes their Confederate heritage. I have ancestors that fought and like being able to portray them. On top of that it’s just awesome to be able to experience a part of our history,” said Michael Graham.

Saturday marked the opening day for the Columbus County Farmers’ Market. Opening ceremonies included a performance by the Edgewood Elementary School chorus.

For the first time ever, the Columbus County Farmers’ Market now accepts EBT cards, or electronic benefit transfer. Essentially, that’s another name for the food stamp program.

State Representative Dewey Hill, attended opening day. He was quick to remind us ‘goodness grows’. “Goodness grows means we have a lot of good food growing in Columbus County, North Carolina. I’m a retail food merchant and also the House Chairman of the Agriculture Committee and we use this all the time.”

State Senator RC Soles also attended opening day.

The Columbus County Farmers’ Market will be open on Saturdays only for the first few weeks.

Once local production increases, the market will be open on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings on Government Complex Road in Whiteville.
