Studying the effects of menopause relative to memory

Does menopause lead to memory loss? Researchers studied the verbal memory, working memory, and brain processing speed of over 2000 women at four different points before and during their transition to menopause. Women showed the biggest change on learning tests during the late perimenopausal stage, the period just before menopause.

The change was subtle. Subjects exhibited a lack of improvement over time rather than an overt decline.

Women’s cognitive abilities rebounded to their premenopausal levels following the onset of menopause, suggesting that the effects are limited.

Researchers also found that women taking hormones before menopause slightly improved their verbal memory and information processing speed by 4 to 6 percent. However, women taking hormone replacement therapy after menopause did not get this same benefit.

In fact, current hormone use among postmenopausal women caused slightly slower processing speeds and worse verbal memory compared to their premenopausal cognitive performance.

The American Red Cross says holidays like Memorial Day are an especially important time to donate blood. More people are traveling so there are likely to be more accidents, and on Tuesday, the Red Cross held a blood drive at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

Hospital staff members know all too well how important it is to donate and many took a break from their day to lend a pint or two.

“I just feel like we should replenish those supplies and if we can and are healthy and able to we should,” said Dr. Renee Morales.

“This time of year is always a difficult time for us, because a lot of our regular donors are traveling, and that means we have less donors come in to donate, and and on top of that, a lot of time there’s accidents and the usage is up, so it’s really important for people to come give, especially now,” added Michelle Waters of the American Red Cross.

The next blood drive is this Friday at Prudential Laney Real Estate on College Road in Wilmington from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will also be a blood drive Sunday at the Harbor United Methodist Church located at 4853 Masonboro Loop Road from 8:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you can’t make it, you can always donate at the American Red Cross located on South Sixteenth Street, which is open Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The NHRMC also has a drive each month, the next one is June 8th from 7:00 a.m.to 4:00 p.m.

All blood types are needed, but right now “O-negative” and “A-negative” are at emergency levels.
