Motorist on scooter injured in Castle Hayne crash

A 53-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday after he came off his motor scooter and hit a van that pulled in front of him in Castle Hayne.James Richard Hewitt, of Rocky Point, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center after the wreck around 2 p.m. and was in critical condition, said Trooper A.F. Chicelli of N.C. Highway Patrol.

Carolina Beach swimmer doesn’t return to shore

The search continued Saturday night for a missing swimmer, last seen off of Carolina Beach.

Crews from all over our area, even Georgia and South Carolina, began searching, both in the water and from the air.

According to Carolina Beach Ocean Rescue, the call came in around 5:30 on Saturday.

A man from the area was swimming but never came back to shore.

Carolina Beach’s Ocean Rescue Director said rip currents are possibly to blame. The agency responded to fifty rescue calls on Saturday.
