Crowds gathered in Carolina Beach last night for the kickoff of the Boardwalk Summer Blast event series. There are more than 100 events scheduled throughout the summer, including bands, dancing, bingo and plenty of food and fun for the entire family.

One business that opened five weeks ago is hoping the traffic on the boardwalk will generate some good business over the summer.

"We’d like to provide something of quality and things that people can afford and family entertainment," said Marshall Cooper of Island Ice Company. "It is a challenging time, but people are looking to also forget some of those things that are in the economy and get out and live life."

Blues legend Mojo Collins entertained the crowd last night. Local rock band Machine Gun will do the honors tonight at 6:30 followed by fireworks at dusk.

You can find a complete schedule at boardwalkmakeover.org.

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Police are investigating the attack of a man who was reading a book on a North Carolina college campus when two teens beat him and took his cell phone.

The News & Record of Greensboro reported Friday that 24-year-old Robert Rhine broke his ankle while chasing the attackers after they punched him in the face.

Police say the man was reading on the Guilford College campus when the attack occurred Thursday afternoon. It started when the pair stopped to ask a question.

Investigators say Rhine chased them but fell and broke his ankle and had to crawl until he could get help from a passer-by.

NAGS HEAD, N.C. — Gov. Beverly Perdue will speak at the groundbreaking ceremony for a new fishing pier on the North Carolina Outer Banks.

Jennette’s Pier lost 540 feet to Hurricane Isabel in 2003 and the owners said they couldn’t rebuild. The North Carolina Aquarium Society owns and operates the pier and has raised millions of dollars to help fund renovation. The new pier will be called the North Carolina Aquarium Pier .

Perdue will speak Friday morning at the pier construction groundbreaking. Last month she signed the bill that authorized the work.

The society has raised $14 million for the project, which will create more than 500 jobs at the site and 1,250 off-site positions.
