NC Democrats clear obstacles in tax, budget plans

RALEIGH — A proposed state budget and tax plan to ease some cuts inside the spending proposal has cleared two major hurdles in the North Carolina House.

The House Appropriations Committee recommended a nearly $18 billion spending plan for next year late Tuesday night after considering dozens of amendments.

But the chamber’s finance committee also agreed late to $780 million in tax increases pushed by Democrats.

More committee scrutiny is expected Wednesday before the changes are voted on by the full House, probably by the end of the week. It’s all designed to get a new budget to Gov. Beverly Perdue this summer.

House Republicans like neither deep spending cuts nor the taxes and say the $4 billion-plus budget gap for next year is exaggerated.

Carolina Beach may have an arsonist at work. Police said two fires broke out in less than 24 hours in a building along the Carolina Beach Boardwalk.

The first fire occurred around 7:00 Tuesday morning. The second happened just after 4:00 Tuesday afternoon.

The building is under construction and was vacant at the time.

Investigators said both fires look very suspicious, and they are looking for leads as who may have started them. “We hope to put an end to it tonight. I don’t know if any arrests will be made as of yet, but we are going to identify all the players involved,” said Sgt. Harry Humphries of the Carolina Beach Police Department.

Police sealed off the building Tuesday as investigators worked the scene.

Provision removed on raising NC cigarette tax

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Body

Members of a House committee have removed a provision that would raise North Carolina’s cigarette tax by 25 cents per pack.

The House Finance Committee agreed Tuesday to delete the cigarette tax increase contained in a proposed $940 million tax plan. That would reduce the package by $123 million.

The decision means less money available to restore cuts in the proposed $18 billion spending package for next year.
