Severe thunderstorm watch in effect until 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until 11 p.m. tonight for Brunswick, New Hanover and Pender counties.Lightning from Friday night’s thunderstorms sparked fires at two New Hanover County homes. No one was injured in the fires, which occurred off Porters Neck Road and Middle Sound Loop Road.

Behind some overgrown bushes off a marked trail was evidence someone drank a few beers, urinated and slept there.“Nothing’s worse than seeing someone else’s trash from where they slept,” said Ryan Brandon, a Wilmington police officer who set out on a hot June morning for a special assignment at Greenfield Lake Park.
