Required motorboat safety approved by NC House

RALEIGH — Young motorboat drivers in North Carolina would be required to meet minimum boating safety education requirements in legislation approved by the House.

The bill approved Wednesday would obligate people under age 26 to complete an approved boating safety course or pass a test to operate a boat with a motor of at least ten horsepower.

There are many exceptions, including those who operate in state waters for less than 90 days, commercial fishermen and someone who is renting a boat.

Violators would face no monetary penalty except for court costs.

Supporters say the requirement hopefully will prevent accidents on the state’s waterways.

The bill now returns to the Senate, which must decide whether to accept the House changes.

BAKERSVILLE, N.C. — Authorities are searching for two young children missing at a western North Carolina mountain park near the Tennessee state line.

The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that a search is being conducted for 6-year-old Alexander Lee Suddeath and 4-year-old Heidi Elizabeth Suddeath. An Amber Alert statement issued by the office said the children may have been abducted, but didn’t give any details on how that might have happened.

The office said the children’s parents were returning to a parking lot on Roan Mountain when they lost sight of the children.

Alexander Suddeath was wearing a yellow shirt and blue shorts. His sister was wearing a pink skirt and purple shirt.
