New Hanover commissioners approve $250M budget

New Hanover County has a budget for the next year, a financial plan that cuts spending and holds the general property tax rate steady.But the budget, narrowly approved Monday by a 3-2 vote, will raise the fire tax for property owners in the unincorporated area by one penny, increasing annual taxes for the typical homeowner by about $20.

Princess Street closed for month

Commuters who use Princess Street will need to find a detour for the next month.

On Monday, the city began construction on the 1200 block of Princess Street. The project is expected to last until July 24.

Princess Street will be closed Monday through Friday, but open on weekends.

City crews will install a new storm water system and Cape Fear Public Utility Authority will replace a deteriorated sewer main on Coye Alley.

Woman rescued after near drowning at Holden Beach

A 49-year-old woman was in critical condition Sunday night after nearly drowning at Holden Beach.

Holden Beach Police said at about 1:00 Sunday afternoon the woman was swimming at the east end of the beach, when she suffered some sort of heart problem. Someone called 911, and emergency crews took the woman to Brunswick Community Hospital.

Investigators have not released her name, but said she was visiting from Denver, near Charlotte.
